How to Perform Hajj ?
Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and a profound spiritual journey that every Muslim is obligated to perform at least once in their lifetime, provided they have the means to do so. This article provides a detailed, step-by-step guide to help you understand and prepare for this sacred journey.
Preparations Before Hajj
Preparing for Hajj is a crucial step to ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage. Here are the key preparations you should make:
Before embarking on Hajj, make a sincere intention to perform the pilgrimage solely for the sake of Allah.
- Ensure you are physically fit to undertake the strenuous journey.
- Save enough money to cover all expenses, including travel, accommodation, and sustenance.
- Obtain a valid passport and visa for Saudi Arabia.
- Ensure your vaccinations are up to date and carry a certificate of vaccination.
- Seek forgiveness from those you may have wronged and settle any debts.
- Study the rituals of Hajj and familiarize yourself with the du’as (supplications) and the significance of each ritual.
The Stages How to perform Hajj
Hajj takes place from the 8th to the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. Here’s a breakdown of the key stages:
1. Ihram
Before entering the state of Ihram
- Bathe and perform ablution (wudu).
- Men should wear two white, unstitched sheets; women should wear modest, plain clothing.
- Declare your intention (niyyah) to perform Hajj and recite the Talbiyah:
2. Tawaf
Arrival in Mecca:
- Upon arriving in Mecca, perform Tawaf, which involves circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.
- Start from the Black Stone, touching or pointing to it each time you pass.
- After Tawaf, pray two Rak’ahs at Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Abraham).
3. Sa'i
Between Safa and Marwah:
- Perform Sa’i, walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah.
- This commemorates Hagar’s search for water for her son Ishmael.
4. Mina
8th of Dhul-Hijjah:
- Travel to Mina, a small village approximately 8 km from Mecca.
- Spend the day in prayer and contemplation.
5. Arafat
9th of Dhul-Hijjah:
- Depart for the plain of Arafat after Fajr (dawn prayer).
- Stand in prayer and reflection at the Mount of Mercy (Jabal al-Rahmah) from noon to sunset.
- This day is the pinnacle of Hajj, symbolizing the Day of Judgment.
6. Muzdalifah
Night of the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah:
- After sunset, proceed to Muzdalifah.
- Collect pebbles for the next day’s ritual and spend the night under the open sky in prayer.
7. Rami al-Jamarat
10th of Dhul-Hijjah
- Return to Mina and perform Rami al-Jamarat, the stoning of the largest pillar, symbolizing the rejection of evil.
- Use seven pebbles, each thrown with the recitation of “Allahu Akbar” (God is the Greatest).
8. Sacrifice
10th of Dhul-Hijjah (Eid al-Adha):
- Sacrifice an animal (sheep, goat, cow, or camel) to commemorate Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah.
- Distribute the meat to the needy.
9. Shaving or Cutting Hair
After Sacrifice:
- Men shave their heads or cut a portion of their hair, while women cut a small lock of hair.
Β
10. Tawaf al-Ifadah
Return to Mecca:
- Perform Tawaf al-Ifadah, another seven circuits around the Kaaba.
- Perform Sa’i again if it wasn’t done previously with the initial Tawaf.
11. Rami al-Jamarat (continued)
11th-13th of Dhul-Hijjah:
- Continue stoning the pillars in Mina over the next two to three days.
- Throw seven pebbles each at the three pillars (small, medium, and large).
12. Tawaf al-Wada
Farewell Tawaf:
- Before leaving Mecca, perform the farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada), a final circumambulation of the Kaaba.
Tips for a Smooth Hajj Experience
- Stay Hydrated: The climate can be extremely hot; drink plenty of water.
- Comfortable Footwear: Wear comfortable and sturdy shoes as there is a lot of walking.
- First Aid Kit: Carry a basic first aid kit for minor injuries or ailments.
- Stay Connected: Keep in touch with your group and have a meeting point in case you get separated.
- Be Patient and Respectful: Hajj involves large crowds; be patient and respectful towards fellow pilgrims.
